Maybe this is just me, but it seems to me that Luffy got stuck with the really gimpy fruit. I mean, being a rubberman's cool and all, but he's hopelessly outmatched by people like Smoker or Alvida, who are literally impervious to physical harm.

Also, I hope to never, ever, ever read One Piece fanfiction, for much the same reason I avoid Harry Potter fanfiction. A rubberman's just too easy to get dirty with.

I read a lot of it, and can recommend some very very good ones should you ever feel the itch. Also, you're not even remotely the first person to think of that, so don't feel so dirty.

It's true there's a wide range of fruits, and Luffy's only maybe two-thirds of the way up the list. I don't think Alvida's is better than his- he could beat her in a pinch, I'm sure. Smoker's kinda tricked out, though. Luffy has to beat him in different ways.
