Rumiko Takahashi revealed in an interview that she doesn't plan out her stories beforehand -- she never thinks past the current weeks' issue. When I found this out, back in the day when I was heavily reading Inuyasha, I thought "oh, this explains everything!"

It's the sort of style that works okay on a comic/gag series like Ranma 1/2, but tends to fall through on something more serious (relatively speaking) and serial like Inuyasha. She does much, much better on short stories and contained serials, like "Maison Ikkouku".

I got into Inuyasah while I was still big into Ranma and fairly new into anime in general, and loved it at the time. Kagome's characterization, unfortunately, reads a lot like a gag-comic character -- she does random shit for the sake of humor and her ridiculous obsession with school and normalcy in the face of almost daily threats to her life was a parody in and of itself. I should warn you, as the series goes on, it just gets weighted down with more and more random characters and convoluted plot lines that make ZERO sense.

Heh, I actually got a kick out of the matter-of-fact nudity, but then again, I'd like to see more topless women being treated with the same casualness as topless men. I think the way she does it was a hold-over from Ranma, where Ranma being frequently topless while in girl-form was a running gag. (Alternatively, it could also be because during the Waring States Era in Japan, naked tits really weren't that big a deal, but while this could explain the randomly half-nude female demons, I don't know how it applies to Kagome.)
