one of those shows you can decide if it's horrible or awesome and the ending feels like you just snorted 20kg of really bad crack. Not to mention, everyone on the fucking planet is talking about it and you have no idea what you're missing and you're wondering if you should care.
An America's Neon Genesis Evangelion with more of a budget and running time.
Other than that, completely right. Including tons of main protagonist that emo around a lot and cry very often. And one very awesome lady who dies in an explosion after sustaining fatal injuries.
Our opinions differ on Eva (but not, I suspect, on what little Lost we've been exposed to >>;; I wasn't inspired to seek more of it out, that's for sure). That said, I get the feeling it's going to hold a roughly equivalent position in American geek culture re. obsessively looking up references and debating the meanings of things for some time to come--it already seems to've spawned this kind of activity in its fandom, and from what I hear of the ending (and its attendant reactions that are, yes, about as mixed as Eva), that won't go away for awhile.
Fanboys fanboying agressive deconstructions of their objects of fanboyhood (particularly Rei lol) is still unparalleled in the irony department though...I'm still waiting for something that funny to happen on American shores. Maybe it already has and I'm not aware of it. The closest I'm coming are women who crush on men written to be deliberately unappealing, and even then it's not nearly that pointed.
That was what my sister thought at the end of it. She said "It's f***ing CONGRATULATIONS all over again!!" To be fair, we'd been up since 5AM watching it so she was a little cranky.
I wasn't too surprised by the ending, given how the rest of the show went along.
