If and when content has been flagged by several users, it will be sent to the Abuse Prevention Team to determine if an adult content setting is necessary. Both the "Explicit Adult Content" and "Offensive Content" settings will affect filtered search results (see below), but only the "Explicit Adult" setting will result in restricted viewing for those under the age of 18.

Any content flagged as "Hate Speech," "Illegal Activity," or "Nude Images of Minors" will direct the user to the Abuse Reporting System where he/she will be asked to fill out a report including the URL of the content. These instances will be handled in the same manner as always.

So basically if you have an LJ account and are over eighteen/are capable of lying about your age, absolutely nothing is changing for you. It should be noted, however, that Livejournal's timing on this is nothing short of horrifically bad.

Honestly, if you're over 18 nothing about how you read changes. My fic journal has NC-17 content, and I now have the choice of: Trusting LJ abuse not to find out about it/trusting people not to flag me multiple times for inappropriate content (and it is, frankly, adult/porn) OR setting my journal as adult only, and having my cut tags and headers eaten by the generic 'adult/explicit material'. The flagging itself bothers me very, very little. The loss of cut tags, ratings, warnings - worries the hell out of me.

That's my biggest issue. Lots of my higher rated stuff is different. Some of it is tame not quite porn and some of it is dubious consent. And how do I rate violence?

Yeah, exactly. I don't know what needs locked and what doesn't, and really? Some of it's pretty disturbing and my readers deserve those headers.

I'm not bothering for now. My readers deserve that respect. Even more so since my range of readers is big. Some people are reading my fluffy blushing ship fic where the characters are fourteen and haven't kissed yet and some are reading my violent hate sex.

Of course not. It's a corporation. Have you ever worked customer service on the phones? If so, then you know how glacially slowly bad ideas are corrected in a corporate setting, and how quickly new, terrible policies are implemented. it's a fact of life. You get enough people together for the purpose of making money, the end result going to contain an awful lot of stupid.

Well, take it from someone who's been answering phones full-time for over a year: the process for changing policies that are obviously horrible to the people on ground level is glacially slow, but the second somebody higher up wants to add in their own two cents, we have a new piece of stupidity to play with.
