HEY GUYS, SPECIAL REQUEST. We all know that Joss Whedon is a cruel god, and loves to inflict suffering upon his creations. Could you all list some of the nasty things he's done to his characters? I don't need Dr. Horrible or Firefly examples, but anything else he's written would be great. Doesn't have to be a death, although those are A++ too.
I need this. For a project. Yes.

OKAY FOR BUFFY: Buffy and Angel were adorably in love for about a season in a half. And then they had sex. And then Angel turned evil and tortured her for months on end. And just as he got his soul back, Buffy was forced to send him into hell.
In season five, Buffy's mother died and Buffy was forced to take care of the house and her little sister. On top of her Slaying duties, this took a toll on her so much that by the end of the season she was pretty much happily jumping to her death.
Though I think my favorite was in season seven when she was leading an army of potential Slayers and one of them died and she buried the poor thing herself.
Also: Willow. Willow is that character that is supposed to be like the window of what the characters are feeling. So if she's crying or horrified then you probably should be too.
The biggest case, I think, was near the end of season six where she and her girlfriend, Tara, finally got together after bad break up and then Tara gets randomly shot and dies in Willow's arms.

See, I'm writing a song. Entitled "Joss Whedon Is a Prick (to his characters)". Sung from the perspective of his characters about how they live in constant fear, just waiting for that other shoe to drop. :|

What about having Evil Angel kill Giles' girlfriend way back when (I think it was Season 2) just as she had figured out how to restore his soul? (Fortunately, she'd copied it to a disk they later found).
Does being turned into a Muppet count as suffering? That happened to Angel in "Smile Time" (an Angel episode).
There's also all the trauma that was heaped on Faith (I'm talking Faith's POV in this case, not the Scooby Gang's).
And in Angel, I'm pretty sure (I read this, so it needs confirming) that he offed one character by having her body permanently turned into a vessel demon called Illyria.

Also, Spike only had love/hate relationships, and pretty much all women treat him like shit except for Buffy's mom, who died.
